Head-shoulders-knees-and-toes is what I learned and still do:

Hat, shirt, underpants, socks, in that order.

I try to avoid cognitive overload and buy similar socks. Short running socks. I no linger care if they do not match, but I will spend two seconds trying to locate matching ones.
