Even after this comment I did not get it until I checked the repo[0]. It seems like it's only posts with a prime number ID
Also, the "Why?" does not explain why. It's a what/how.
Reason enough I’d say.
Basically only HN items with prime IDs and with filters on different classes of primes.
No ?
Beyond "just primes" it tags special prime families (Mersenne, Fermat, Sophie Germain, and palindromic primes) and supports jumping to a target ID via prime-counting estimates.
Fun math result: palindromic primes basically stop around 10 million for HN’s current ID range. Reason: every even-digit palindrome is divisible by 11 (alternating digit sum is 0), so the only prime even-digit palindrome is 11. That means palindromic primes can only have odd digit counts, and the biggest 7‑digit palindromic prime is 9,989,899 -- the next one would need 9 digits (100M+), beyond HN today.
Also added a posts mode: the first post to ever hit each prime score becomes the permanent winner for that score, and the list is ordered by score descending (so the long tail collapses into a tight leaderboard).
Here's a table of the post counts per the different categories:
| Filter | Count |
|---------------|-----------|
| mersenne | 7 |
| fermat | 5 |
| germain | ~100,000 |
| palindrome | 781 |
| p^k + k | 2 |
| p^k + 2 | 16 |
| p^k + 4 | 152 |
| p^k + 6 | 119 |
| p^k + 8 | 9 |
| p^k + 10 | 173 |
| p^k + 12 | 183 |
| p^k + e≤k² | 357 |
| p^k + e<√p | 2,527 |

Other than that, I thought it was an interesting way of sampling the news as the time delta grow further apart between each item.
Thank you for the comment on interestingness. I thought so to, but I didn't realize it in same way you did in your observation that it gets more selective over time - I like that, in a sense that's kind of natural as the environment is more competitive over time. Thank you for the interesting idea!
And how many of these self-promoting fake HN mockups do we need from the same person? https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...
