War on Cancer: Camcelled

I write the sort of science fiction where people disregard science for absolutely stupid reasons, but reality has a way of undermining me. So, I'm reading that cancer research is being de-funded because people didn't like the science that brought vaccines and kept so many from dying, and they rather use that money for... way less humane causes, to put it mildly. The cultured reptilian part of my brain that I use to write dystopias sort of understands what's going on. But cancer? Damn. Is anybody out there who sincerely wants that scourge on them or their families? What excuses do we make?
