China's exports to the US have dropped dramatically but overall their global exports have still increased.

Bottom line: US tariffs are hurting American consumers more than Chinese producers. The most reasonable and constructive way for the USA to take on China in a trade war was in coordination with allies --- which we no longer have.
China has concluded that they have the upper hand and have started taking a noticeably harder line in negotiations. The *real* trade war has just now started.
Time is on their side. All they have to do is wait --- for the USA to effectively surrender and Trump to declare victory.
