Page 55 is particularly brilliant, where the author roots a camera just by playing a carefully crafted sound at it.

Reminds me of when we used to load programs off of audio cassette tapes back in the day. Also it, somewhat obliquely, reminds me of BLIT by David Langford.

My first computer was a Tandy CoCo TRS-80 with an audio cassette tape. Just yesterday I was using AI to formulate a plan to create graphics for a BASIC program.

I don’t know if I’ll build something, because there might not be much point, but I sure have a lot of nostalgia for these old systems.

This is brilliant idea, well executed, and god darn it's using some pretty art. It's a shame reading it from a pdf though, and the print on demand options are quite pricey. I'd gladly subscribe to get this kind of thing in the mail though.

What makes it such a shame? It's full color, properly formatted, and nothing is missing. Looks beautiful on my color e-ink device.

The reading experience on screen is worse than paper normally, but manageable. But when it comes to such pretty artwork and design, there is just something special about having it in physical touchable paper that makes a massive difference.

There is also the casual nature of reading a physical newspaper. On a screen i feel pressured to consume it all in one sitting, or i'll forget it and read something else next time. But with a printed copy, i can put it on the coffee table to read bit by bit over a few days, or just admire the design while relaxing.

Mailed printed subscriptions for a decent price are somewhere on our TODO list. First we want to make it available for free on more events (like conferences, demoparties, etc).

Is this a spam/fishing campaign?

I got a spam email from a google group without having subscribed to this group before from 3 hours ago, long before this news item made it to the HN front page (e.g. it's unlikely that somebody else made a typo that resulted in my email address).

In the unlikely case that there are any humans in the loop: please stop doing this sort of 'marketing'.

This is weird. I personally know humans in the loop (not affiliated in any way, but itsec is a small community) and they would never do such thing (especially the lead editor).

If you're sure you never subscribed, consider contacting them to let them know about this.

There doesnt seem to be anything on the site for actually printing out a personal copy, though the magazine says it does. Everything on the printing page says to just send email. Where can I find some printer friendly documents?

Spot on. So here's the problem: initially we wanted to just put the print-ready files on the website. But then — once we got more experience with physical printing — we've learned that it's not so simple, because there are several moving parameters (like bleed sizes, spine sizes, etc).

As such, for now unfortunately you still have to email us with the parameters you need, so we can generate a PDF set for you. But in the future we want to just generate all possible sets and put them out there (all in due time).

I wouldn't worry about it for people printing at home. Just provide files in landscape A4 size with a layout friendly to home printing/stapling (i.e, front and back covers on the first page). People will print out crappy versions but they'll be able to read it
