I was a child who would take the damn marshmallow. And I don’t even like marshmallows. After I internalized this lesson I became the kid who would get two marshmallows and trade them for something else I liked more.
Merely reflecting on the idea that patience and suppressing the compulsive urges gets you more of anything reworked my brain to be impervious to compulsive behavior.
