One of the root causes is a comparatively small group of moderately crazy, anti-scocial billionaires and their lackeys who have spent the past 50 years steadily gerrymandering, manufacturing consent, and rigging the laws, driving local news narratives with cheap newspapers, radio, and TV stations in small states to get red Senators, the legislature, SCOTUS, and finally achieving an easily-managed POTUS. Meanwhile, the blue team is "too pure" to counter warfare and sometimes accepts money from more or less the same domestic and foreign sources. The American people in truth have only token, marginalized representatives who interact with power in a performative, minimal fashion with little real impact.
