Even if the damage is transient and is unwound over the next decade or so, the actual day-to-day experience is so traumatic.
It really goes to show how important the story we tell ourselves about the world is and how much the leaders around us: bosses, older relatives, presidents, etc contribute to that narrative. Being able to believe in the mission really goes a long way to motivating one to get out of bed in the morning and get to it.
